no cookies are set, by this site or by anything on it. two values are written to local storage, and neither ever leaves your browser:
pg:rate- the playback speed you chose, so the next episode starts at the same speed. one number, kept until you clear this site's data.
pg:pos:<episode>- how many seconds into an episode you had got, so you can pick it up where you left it — in any language, since the key is the episode rather than the page. deleted by itself when you reach the end of one.
[what your browser contacts]
opening an episode makes requests to other places, and every one of them learns your IP address, because a request has to come from somewhere.
- SoundCloud
- the audio. episodes stream from Lucian Haas's original feed and nothing is re-hosted here, so they see your address and which episode you opened — from the moment the page loads rather than when you press play, because the player asks the file how long it is in order to draw the timeline.
- Cloudflare
- serves these pages, and counts page views without cookies and without any identifier that follows you — aggregate totals, so there is no record of a single visit to keep or to delete. its server logs (address, page, time, browser) exist to keep the site up and last days rather than months.
- Turnstile
- Cloudflare's check that a submission comes from a person rather than a script, in place of a captcha you would have to solve. loaded only once you start typing in a form, never on a page you are reading.
[if you send something]
the [fix] button on a transcript and the form on [about] are both voluntary — the whole site works without either. a submission carries what you wrote (for a correction, the words you marked, the episode and the timecode), the page you came from, and an e-mail address only if you chose to give one, which is used to reply to you and for nothing else. your IP address is not stored with it — it is counted for an hour against a limit on how much one person can send, and that counter deletes itself.
it is kept by Cloudflare and e-mailed to me through Resend, both acting on my instructions only and both US companies, so that transfer rests on their standard data protection terms. nobody else sees it. the stored copy deletes itself after 30 days; the e-mail in my inbox is what I actually work from. the reason I may hold it at all is a legitimate interest in keeping the transcripts correct and the site usable — and, for an address, that you chose to give it.
a submission is a suggestion, not an edit: every one is read by a person and checked against the audio before anything changes, and an accepted correction becomes a spelling rule in the pipeline. nothing you send is published, and your name or address never appears on the site.
[asking about it]
you can ask what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, object to it being held at all, or ask for a copy. the form is the way to ask — quote enough of what you sent that it can be found, since without an e-mail address nothing else links a submission to you.
you can also complain to the data protection authority where you live. and this describes the site as it stands today — it is a small project and it changes; when what it does with data changes, this page changes with it.
